2019 Links Junior Championship

So far this 2019 season, Mother Nature has not been kind.  The event at Royal Links was no exception.  For the first time in three years, we had to reduce the event to eighteen holes.  Day one, the weather was windy with gust upwards of 25 MPH.  Day two we saw more of the same winds, only fiercer.  To make matters worse, the rain started falling and so did the temperature.  After the lead group finished hole seven, we decided to call off round two for the players safety.  So, all winners were decided off of their first-round scores.

William Moser, Boys 15-18, won for the first time on the RLJGT with an impressive 76 Moser has been a longtime supporter of the tour, so it is nice to see him get this victory.  Second went to Hunter Esparza, who was able to keep the bad holes to a minimum to card a 78.  Third was Jared Smith, who played well on the front, but struggled on the back nines opening three holes with bogey, bogey, triple.  He held it together on the last six holes to finish with an 80.

Boys 13-14 winner was Emmett Blake with an 88.  Considering the course conditions, this was a very good round. We anticipate Blake being a contender in the winner’s circle for future events…the kid has some game.

Eli Marshall, boys 11-12, ran away from the field with an 18-shot victory.  Eli has been on a tear recently, finishing in the medals in nearly all his starts. Is anyone going to stop him?

A solid golf game must run in the Marshall household. Eli’s brother, Charlie, won the boys 9-10 with a 96.

Newcomer Morgan Goldstein, who will play for University of Iowa next year, won the girls 15-18 with an 81.  Morgan opened with birdie, but quickly found out when you drive into a fairway bunker, it’s better to blast out sideways with the difficult bunkers at Royal Links, a true links style golf course.  A triple and two bogies had Morgan out in 43, but she pulled it together on the back nine with a 38. Close second and fresh off her Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at the Masters, Yana Wilson scored 83.

The summer part of our tour kicks off with the College Prep Championship at TPC Las Vegas for two days, and Cascata on day three.  This is a great event to get a feel for what’s its like to play in college, with 54 holes.  So, sign up quickly, the field is limited to 44 players only.
