The RecruitLook Junior Golf event at Boulder City Golf Club on April 9-10 had the best weather so far this year. A solid tournament field competed in our first Major Championships of the season.

Kevin Inthachack, boys 15-18, won his third straight event, playing some of his best golf on the year. In windy conditions on day one, Kevin played steady golf and posted a one over par 73. He opened his second round with a double bogey, then steadied himself and finished with a 5 over par 77 to take the win. Coming in second was Tyler Smerz, and with Smerz’s runner up finish, it currently puts him second to Kevin in the Player of the Year race.
We had another three-peat winner in the boys 13-14 division by CJ Martin. CJ has shown remarkable improvement in his game since the season started, and it’s apparent with his 3-peat. CJ shot 81-78/159 to finish five ahead of Rashon Williams, 86-78/164. Rashon stated he has been busy with basketball and hadn’t played or practiced for five months, but said he did feel good about his first round score of 86 given the long layoff from golf. Rashon was paired with CJ for round two, and both boys played shot for shot all day – they both fired a score of 78.

The 9-10 age groups played on Sunday and Alex Lac won his first event of the season. Lac has completely seen his season turnaround after shooting a 100 in his first event; he cut 18-strokes off his first event to shoot an impressive 82 at Boulder City Golf Club. Probably most impressive was his back nine score of 37. Newcomer to the tour and taking second place was Tripp Hildreth with a 92. Tripp made some nice shots, and we’re expecting him to win his first tour event very soon. With his victory, Alex has taken over first place in the point standings over previous leader Nathan Putala, 1,050 points to 975.
Rebecca Oertel won the girls 15-18 with some of her best golf of the year. Her rounds of 77-79/156 could have been much better, but she played the 18th hole five over par for the two days. This was Rebecca’s first win since event number one in 2016. The defending 2016 tour champion is always steady, and it could be dangerous to the others in the field if she gets hot. Placing second was Sloan Pyatt with round of 85-89/174. With her victory, Rebecca is now in second place with 850 points; leader is Sloan Pyatt with 925 points.
Another competitive age group was the girls 13-14. Bella Gopwani won her second event of the year with rounds of 80-80/160. New player to the tour Katelyn Smith took second after settling down her opening round jitters 91-83/174. Close third was Carolyn Lemon 89-86/175. Carolyn leads the Player of the Year points race 925 to Bella’s 900. It’s great to see this age groups point’s race heating up so early in the season. It will be fun to watch this play out over the course of the year.
The girls 11-12 division was neck-and-neck the entire tournament. Each golfer fired a 94 and 95 (on opposite days), but it was Natalie Cheong who won the girls 11-12 in a scorecard playoff with Yuechu Lu. Both girls scored 189’s for the two days.
Yana Wilson (79 total), girls 9-10, won her 10th event in a row. It’s impressive to win on any tour, but to win when everyone wants to stop your streak takes ice in the veins. Yana’s closest challenger was Dakota Tallent’s 88. Yana is the leading the Player of the Year points race with 1200 points to Dakota’s 900.
