Recapping the Northwest Valley Junior Golf Tournament

Painted Desert hosted our next to last event before the Tour Championship in December and we could not have asked for better weather. Shorts and short sleeves was the dress code for both days.

austen-ancell-commitAusten Ancell, who recently committed to Regis University, won his third boys event of the year on the RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour in the boys 15-18 age group. Austen played steady on day one, posting an even par 72, to lead by 9 over Morgan Cooper’s 81. Austen showed his true grit after taking an 8 on the first hole day two, but that only fired him up. Austen played well enough on the day (80) to finish five ahead of Morgan Cooper. Tyler Smerz, who recently joined the RecruitLook tour, played solid golf on day two (77) to finish at 162. He bested Kevin Inthachak in a scorecard playoff to finish 3rd.

Riana Mission ran away with the Girls 15-18 division. She started slow with a front nine 42 on day one. Her back nine improved to 39, giving her an 81 for the day. Mom and Dad said she has been studying a lot dsc09776lately and has not been able to practice the way she would like to. Riana came out firing at the flag all day long on day two to score a 32-36/68, 149 total. Riana’s 68 was the best round of the tournament by any player, male or female, and the lowest two day round total for the girls 15-18 of the year. Her round was very consistent, 6 birdies, 10 pars, and only 2 bogies. Second was Jade Magana with a 2-day total of 166. Jade has steadily improved her play this year – a day 2 score of 80 is one of her best of the year.

Kameron Kelsey continues to show he is one of our most improved players from a year ago with some strong play as of late. Kameron was the only player to finish under par for the two days with rounds of 70-72/142 (-2); he won the boys 13-14 by a whopping 22 strokes over another new comer to our tour, Jackson Parrish, 164. William Moser took third with a 74-82/166 img_5684total. With his victory, Kameron has taken the lead in the Player of the Year race 2,025 points to 1,950 for William.

The girls 13-14 was a shootout as all three girls were with 3 strokes of each other after day 1. Carolyn Lemon won by 6 shots with rounds of 86-85/172. Second place went to Fiona McCombe 89-89/178, Bella Gopwoni took 3rd with rounds of 88-91/179.

Dylan Girouard won the boys 11-12 with rounds of 92-99/ 191 and Carson Murphy won the girls 11-12 with rounds of 97-93/190

Kyle Guloy had a personal best front nine of even par 36 and finished with an 81 total to win the boys 9-10. Yana Wilson, girls 9-10, scored a 38 on the front nine to lead by one at the turn. She finished with a 78 for the day to win by 3 over Brynn Kort’s 81. Jayda Sidney took 3rd with an 83.

Congratulations to all or our winners and participants, and we look forward to seeing many of you again at Boulder Creek as the Player of the Races are heating up.
