RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour 2017 – Event 2 Recap

RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour

North Las Vegas Junior Championship
Aliante Golf Club
March 25-26, 2017

The second event for 2017 on the RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour took place at Aliante Golf Club on March 25-26, 2017. We finally got some cooperation from Mother Nature as day two’s weather was excellent. Day 1 was nice but the wind kicked up in the afternoon causing some first round scores to be higher than normal.

Kevin Inthachack, boys 15-18, made it two tournament wins in a row on the year with an outstanding day two round of 71. He had trouble with the wind on day one and trailed first round leader Greg Price by seven shots. Kevin blazed through the front nine on day two with a strong 2 under par 34 to go into the back nine tied with Greg. Two more birdies on the back enabled Kevin to cruise to a 4 shot victory over Greg who took second place.

Just like the boys 15-18 division, the boys 13-14 winner has now won back-to-back tournaments to start the RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour. That winner is CJ Martin. All the hard work that Martin has been dedicating to his game is really starting to pay off. His mental game has impressed us just as much as his shot making. Martin’s first round score of 78 was one of his best — even as the wind easily hit gusts of 30 mph. With rounds of 78-81/159, CJ Martin finished one ahead of William Moser, 82-78/160. Moser had a chance at his first ever victory on the tour, as he made up the four shot deficit at the turn, heading to the back nine with a one shot lead. Martin turned up the heat on the back nine with an impressive 38 to Moser’s 40. The shootout between Moser and Martin was buzzing in the clubhouse, and we’re sure this won’t be the last time the two go at it for a tournament win.

Kyle Guloy improved three strokes from his first event on the RLJGT to capture the boys 11-12 division. Guloy is a golfer we’re expecting to be at the top of the leaderboard, as consistency is the name-of-the-game for Kyle. If he can continue to improve each tournament, he just might be a tour champion!

Two-time winners were the theme on the boy’s side. Nathan Putala, boys 9-10, also made it two tour wins in a row with a score of 87. He beat out Alexander Lac to win by 3. Putala improved 5 strokes from the first tour event, and shot a low 41 for the boys 9-10 on the front nine.

The first and second place finishers in the girls 15-18 division were separated by only 4 strokes. The girls each had an “off day” and an “on day”. Caroline Valle shot 85-94/179 to edge out Sloan Pyatt 99-84/183. This finish by Pyatt pushes her into first place on the overall leaderboard for 2017, and this was the 2nd career tour win for Valle (2016 Summerlin Shootout winner).

Carolyn Lemon (95-83/178) saved her best golf for day two with an 83 to finish ten shots ahead of the runner-up Carson Murphy (101-87/188). Murphy was excellent on day 2, improving an overall 14 strokes! Lemon, the Girls 13-14 2016 Tour Champion, is picking up right where she left off – finishing T2 and 1st in the first two events in 2017.

Looking to make a statement in her first ever event on the RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour – Joanne Lee fired the low score of the tournament on the girls side for our 36-hole players. Lee shot an amazing one under par 71 in brutal wind conditions. She followed with a day-2 score of 77 to win her first tournament by 2 strokes over Ali Mulhall. Close second after day one was Ali Mulhall with a 74. Mulhall was consistent with a 74-76/150, but Lee’s first round proved to be the difference. Incredibly, both girls each had 4 birdies in their rounds.

In the girls 9-10, Yana Wilson played some of her best golf for the year with a spectacular even par 72 to win her second in a row. The stat of the day is Yana Wilson’s undefeated streak for RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour events. Wilson has never lost on the RLJGT in 8 tournament appearances – including the Tour Championship in 2016. The competition is definitely chasing Wilson, but they are closing in fast. A close second with one of her best rounds was Brynn Kort with a 74. Only three back and taking third place was Angelina Huang with a 77. Will anyone break Wilson’s win streak?

Don’t forget that our 3rd event has been moved to April 9th-10th. It will be the Boulder City Junior Golf Championship at Boulder City Golf Club. To go along with the theme of the Masters that weekend, the Boulder City Junior Championship will be a Major for the RLJGT. What does that mean? It means points will double for the leaderboard!
