Hard to believe this past weekend was early December — the weather was unbelievable all weekend for the 2017 RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour at Boulder Creek. The course was in amazing shape and the greens were rolling quickly; we heard a lot of players talking about the number of three putts they had.
The final event before the Tour Championship had golfers battling every single shot in order to be in a good position to earn valuable points. The Points Leaderboards are getting tight, and all points will double for the Tour Championship.
In the boys 15-18, Kameron Kelsey returned to action after a brief hiatus, and it was evident that his nerves were getting the best of him early on – shooting an 80 on round one. Kelsey trailed first round leader, Skyler Kno, by 5 strokes entering the final 18 holes; however, Kelsey was able to shake the nerves and settle in to fire an incredible round of 73 – just edging out Kno’s 75-79/154. Michael Spriggs with one of his best showings on the year (77-78/155) finished in third place. Michael Salerno picked up 125 points to close the gap on Kevin Inthachack for the overall Points Leaderboard.
Jackson Parrish needed to win this event if he was to have any chance of over taking CJ Martin at the Tour Championship. With steady play all weekend, Parrish posted the best two day score of any player with rounds of 72-74/146 to finish 7 shots ahead of newcomer, Hunter Esparza. Esparza made a statement in his first ever RLJGT event with rounds of 76-77/153. We look forward to seeing Esparza and his crafty golf game in more events to come. A close third was William Moser with rounds of 74-80/154. Moser’s last 3 RLJGT 2-day scores: 159, 158, 154 – he currently is in 3rd place overall in total points. CJ Martin picked up 90 points and still leads the Boys 13-14 Points race with 2,290 points. With his fourth victory of the year, Jackson Parrish is in second with 2,100 points.
Two things we value most on the RecruitLook Junior Golf Tour: being competitive and having fun. Kyle Guloy and Bradley Bourn, in the boys 11-12, are best of friends and it really shows on the course. They both show amazing sportsmanship to each other throughout the rounds, but we all know deep down they each want to be first on the podium. Bourn was sick all week, but he did not let that stop him from playing..and playing well. With rounds of 81-79/160, Bourn, took first place — finishing three ahead of Kyle Guloy’s 83-80/163. Guloy is leading the overall Points race with 1600 points.
Playing some of his best golf, Shenlone Wu cruised to an easy victory in the boys 9-10 with a sold 76. Second place went to Alexander Lac with an 81, and third place went to Nathan Putala with an 88. This one, two, three finish is how they are in the point standing also; Shenlone leads the point standings with 2,450 points.
In the girls 15-18 division, Fiona McComb scored 93-88/181 to narrowly beat newcomer Angelina Kilton 98-84/182. Angelina played 14 shots better on day two and almost overtook Fiona for first place; great showing for her first event. McComb now sits in fourth place overall for the overall Points race.
In the girls 13-14 division, Bella Gopwani and Carolyn Lemon have been battling each other all year and this weekend was no different. One of these two young ladies has won every event this year on the tour except for one. We weren’t surprised to see them both in contention for another victory on Sunday. Gopwani prevailed with rounds of 82-89/171 to finish four ahead of Carolyn 87-88/175. Carolyn leads the over Points race with 2,525 points. Gopwani is second with 2,350.
Another highly anticipated match was going to be Yana Wilson against Natalie Cheong in the girls 11-12. Through eight holes it was very close, but Natalie had to withdraw due to illness. Even with the W/D Natalie leads the girls 11-12 with 2,775 points. On day 2, Yana decided to try the Red tees and did quite well, shooting an 81. Great job, Yana!
The Girls 9-10 was a family affair with the Huang girls taking first and second place. Angelina scored 75, sister Cameron shot 79, and close third was Yueshi Lu with an 81. Lu is the overall Points leader with 2,000 points, and Angelina is second with 1,650 points. The chase to be the Tour Champion in this age division is still wide open!
Heading into the Tour Championship, many of the age division will come down to who plays the best at Reflection Bay. This event is open to all players, so don’t miss out on playing one of the best courses in the valley.
